Free Movies on BYU Campus–Provo

If you’re ever interested in going to a free movie, BYU campus is the place to look–especially if you like foreign movies, or ones that make you think. My old roommate Megan and I went to International Cinema last week and saw The Orphanage (or El Orfanato, which is its original name in Spanish). I think the last time before that that I had gone to International Cinema was about a year and a half ago, when they were showing Amelie. Anyway, the moral of the story is that you can always find some great movies playing at International Cinema, and they’re completely free.

So we saw The Orphanage, which was terrifying. It was the week of Halloween, so they were showing scary movies–they like to base their movie schedule around holidays. It was a really good movie that actually had a wonderful ending, but for the record, I do not recommend it if you have an overactive imagination (like my husband does). It’s the kind of scary that stays with you.

All International Cinema films are played in 250 SWKT (the auditorium in the western corner of the Spencer W. Kimball Tower–that’s the really tall building you can see all the way from Orem. Here’s a link to the BYU website’s map of campus). You can take snacks with you, and there’s a vending machine in a room just outside the auditorium if you decide you want something at the last minute. Next week they’ll be showing Good Bye Lenin!, a German movie; Buena Vista Social Club, a Spanish movie; and The Golden Door, an Italian movie. Click here for the entire schedule until Christmas and to find out more about the movies. If you want to see what the exact showtimes are for this week, click here; you can also see next week’s showtimes at that same website by clicking on “coming soon” at the top of the page.

BYU also has Dollar Nights at the Varsity Theater (in the Wilkinson Student Center right next to the Jamba Juice), where you can see more current and popular movies for a dollar. You buy tickets at the Information Desk just around the corner from the Jamba Juice. So if you’re ever looking for some really cheap movie action, look around BYU campus and see what you can find. Chances are good there’ll be something.
